Caraneal Yorkshire Terriers - Our Breed

The Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog with a silky blue and tan coat. It was developed in the 1800s in Yorkshire in Northern England and is one of the most popular breeds in North America.

The breed is nicknamed Yorkie and is placed in the Toy Group by the American Kennel Club. Caraneal Yorkshire Terriers has been associated with the breed for over 40 years.

The Yorkie is a very popular companion dog, but it is not necessarily good for very young children because of the dog’s small size.

From its origins as a breed used by English coal miners to catch rats, the Yorkshire Terrier is now treasured as a lapdog and companion.  It is has also been reduced in size over the years and a typical Yorkie will weigh between four and seven pounds when full grown.

The breed standard dictates what a Yorkshire Terrier should look like, and gives a guide to the ideal characteristics and traits of the dog.  This is not of such importance to a pet owner, but is critical to anyone wishing to exhibit and breed.  For example, traditionally, the tail on a Yorkshire Terrier in the United States is docked.
